Eastward I Stand

Eastward I stand, for favours I pray,
Woden I pray,
The wise one and the mighty one,
The heavenly hunter I pray,
Ing I pray and Thunor,
Frige I pray and Freo,
Erce, Erce, Erce, Mother of the Earth I pray,
Earth-mother I pray and Sky-father
Hail to thee! Blessed be in the God’s embrace,
Thy womb fertile be,
Thy loins fruitful be, so that
Under the sky,
Upon this earth
Fertile the orchards be blossoming,
Fruitful the fields be burgeoning,
Filled with food for the use of man.
Hail to thee! Blessed be!
In the heavens’ might and the heavens’ hall,
In the holy charms and the sacred spells,
May the Gods who wrought these lands grant us
growing gifts and peaceful lands.
Hail to thee! Blessed be!

Southward I stand, and for boons I beg,
Erce, Erce, Erce, Mother of the Earth I pray,
Earth-mother I pray and Sky-father
That by the grace of your womb and the strength of your spear,
By the power and the will of all the Gods this charm
I may speak, and that
By his strength,
By his courage,
And by the spear of his loins,
You make grow the crops we use,
You make green the meadows we choose, and that
By my heart,
By my life,
By the fruit of my womb,
You keep our lives safe and our children hale,
You keep our deeds one with the gods’ will and the fates’ weaving.

Westward I stand, and for favours I pray,
Erce, Erce, Erce, Mother of the Earth I pray,
Earth-mother I pray and Sky-father,<
That by the grace of your womb and the strength of your spear,
You may grant us
Fields flourishing
Fruitful and thriving,
Fields of millet crops,
And fields of barley crops,
And fields of wheat crops,
And all the crops the earth may yield.

Northward I stand, and for boons I beg,
Woden I pray,
The wise one and the mighty one,
The heavenly hunter I pray,
Ing I pray and Thunor,
Frige I pray and Freo,
Erce, Erce, Erce, Mother of the Earth I pray,
Earth-mother I pray and Sky-father,
May the Heavenly Lord,
And the Heavenly Hunter,
This land keep safe from every foe,
From the foe in the north,
And the foe in the south,
From the foe in the east,
And the foe in the west,
From poison
And from pollution,
And from the Evil that flies over the land.

May the Heavenly Lord,
And the Heavenly Hunter
This land keep safe from every harm,
From wyrms and wights,
From hoaxes and hexes,
And from the Evil that flies over the land.

Erce, Erce, Erce, Mother of the Earth I pray,
Earth-mother I pray and Sky-father,
The heavenly hunter I pray,
For the grace of my womb I pray and the strength of your spear.

Erce, Erce, Erce, Mother of the Earth we pray,
Earth-mother we pray and Sky-father,
For the grace of the womb we pray and the strength of the spear.

A charm for my nascent novel “HWW”.

It is based on a historical Anglo-Saxon charm to the Earth-Mother or Nerthus as that Goddess is called in Tacitus’ “Germania”.
